Comfort eating WIAW


Well, this is short and sweet, but it is my first WIAW in a few weeks so I hope the amount of food I ate yesterday makes up for that. My family left today for Morocco on their four year diplomatic stint and we got to see them last night for the last time, so enter comfort food galore!wiawmarfigslogo

Breakfast/06h30: a pear smoothie to go. I wasn’t very hungry after comfort eating myself to the point of discomfort the evening before, so I whizzed this up and made tracks to work a bit later than usual to help set up PhD defenses. I usually have some sort of starch with my smoothies, such as oats or all bran, but this more than filled the gap.smoothiedrinkTea-time snack/10h00: a carrot and coffee. My stomach was in knots so there was no real desire to dig into the snack I had made. The carrot was also just to keep my hands busy, because once I’m stressed I tend to twitch about and make everyone nervous.carrotsnackLunch/12h30: Stock photo I’m afraid, and my tupperware was double this size, but steamed zucchini and pumpkin with the usual side of coffee. I still wasn’t feeling up for food but one has to sometimes just get on with it, and luckily steamed anything is hardly tough to swallow.WP_000142Post-work/14h30: A carrot and water on the way home. I lost my water bottle so now I’m being super environmentally naughty by buying bottled water all the time. When I took my little sister to the local eatery the other day she sassed me about all the bottles in the car (there’s about 10!) and I had to make up some story about waiting to find a place to recycle them just to get her to stop judging me :pcarrotsnack1Afternoon snack/16h30: My appetite was coming back so I had an orange whilst finishing up a ridiculous assignment, followed by 1 cup frozen papaya with 1 tsp almond butter + prune purée, and soy protein powder with hot water. I’ve started using a mini whisk and even that doesn’t get rid of the lumps, stupid brand! Still, with some NuNaturals drops it tastes pretty awesome, so that’s ok. Also, a wholewheat wrap, 1/4 or so cup lentils and salsa.orangesnackpapayasnacklentilsnackDinner/18h30: A nutritional yeast-laden salad and curry with 1/4 cup couscous and red peppers. We went over to the hotel where my family was staying and they had pizza and carried on but I was a bit too wonky for that. I wasn’t too focused on the food anyway – as I was sitting there with my sister on my lap squashing her it became more and more real that I wouldn’t get to see those hands or pet her hair for a very long time, so my appetite at that point was set aside. dinnerstewDessert/all night long: once we got home I started on the comfort eating like a beast: soy powder drinks, a hot chocolate made with boiling water (milky hot chocs gross me out, even with soy milk), cookies, 2 sheets of nori, all-bran with almond butter, a cookie dough choc pop, zucchini…it didn’t seem to stop! All delicious, of course, but good grief.cookiehotchoclots seconddessert thirddessert noriyumAnyway, when I got home I had a good cry and it turns out my sister did the same, so at least I wasn’t the only one. We wasted so much time since we found out they were leaving in Feb, but so it goes. It’s going to be strange watching my siblings grow up via Skype, but thank goodness that exists. When I was a diplomatic brat overseas I never had any idea visually of what was happening with my family in South Africa, so it was always a shock to come back and see cousins grown or everyone else just getting older.

But back to food, since I don’t want to freak anyone out with too much life stories and not enough chow, I’m getting on with the ebook, so if there are any random treats anyone would like to see Marfig-ified, let me know! I have two weeks of reduced hours because my one job is on holiday, so lots more time to bake and make food. Plus, I got a new gas stove/electric oven combo yesterday that needs testing – look how shiny!ovennew

  1. Oooo love the shiny new oven/stove! It looks a bit like the one in my house, except mine is not so shiny any more. Also – I’ve had the same problem with rice & hemp protein powders that are always so lumpy. I find blending them is the only way to get rid of the lumps! I hope you feel better soon, at least Skype will make it possible to keep in touch with your family – yay for technology 🙂


    • The oven is magical – of course it’s easier to see how dirty stuff becomes when it arrives gleaming from the store, so more incentive to channel my inner obsessive compulsive back into cleaning 😉

      So glad I’m not the only crazy who can’t get smooth protein drinks without blending – I thought I just wasn’t putting enough effort into whisking, but I’m still miffed that the product instructions don’t come with an evil laugh, because it honestly feels like a joke to “just add water and stir”. :p

    • Thank you so much Natalie! I’m trying to stay positive (there’s a lot of chocolate in the house!), but wow, love is a powerful emotion to come to terms with.

      One of my friends actually asked me the other day if I was eating more carrots than usual because I was getting uber orange again 😉 Best snack ever – prefer them even to apples and other natural sources of munch.

      The only downside to my fantastic new oven is that I can see how dirty the floor is! :p
